ADLINK Technology, a global leader in edge computing, today announced its participation in 5G-DIVE, an international project aimed at establishing the technical merits and business value of 5G technologies.
5G-DIVE is a H2020 5G-PPP project funded by the European Commission and the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan and composed of partners from industrial and academic field of both regions. The consortium is comprised of 12 partners: University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) as the European project coordinator, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) as the Taiwanese project coordinator, Ericsson EAB, Interdigital Germany, Telefónica, Telcaria Ideas, Rise, NCTU University, Askey, Institute for Information Industry (III) and ADLINK.
The 5G-DIVE project will focus on two vertical pilots: Autonomous Drone Scouts and Industry 4.0. ADLINK will be leading management and coordination of consortium partners to deliver the Industry 4.0 pilot by providing the necessary space and technical support to test all contributed technologies. Both trials will implement a bespoke, end-to-end 5G design tailored to the requirements of target applications in each vertical pilot, such as digital twinning and drone fleet navigation. 5G-DIVE’s bespoke design is built around two main pillars:
- End-to-end 5G connectivity, including 5G New Radio, Crosshaul transport and 5G Core;
- And distributed edge and fog computing, integrating intelligence located closely to the user.
“The edge and fog computing capabilities extend beyond the previous
EUTW-Phase-I 5G-CORAL solution framework by adding support for automation based on artificial intelligence and distributed data sharing and storage,” explained Angelo Corsaro, CTO of ADLINK. “The intelligent design is envisioned to achieve optimized performance, thus boosting the proven business value of 5G in each targeted vertical application.”
5G-DIVE pilot trials will run for several weeks in real-life testbeds in Europe and Taiwan, leveraging the European 5G end-to-end facilities from ICT-17 call and Taiwan’s testbed facilities.
5G-DIVE is presented as a continuation of two previous projects, 5G-Crosshaul and 5G-CORAL. The current project will use the previous research carried out in 5G-Coral and 5G-Crosshaul to improve the integration of 5G NR, Crosshaul and Core with the intelligent edge and fog platform developed by 5G-CORAL, provide customization to each vertical application, and add automation and intelligence tools to maximize the value proposition of 5G for each vertical.
