Scalability 

Vortex OpenSplice has proven scalability in the most demanding mission and business critical applications. Vortex OpenSplice uniquely offers users the ability to have a Shared-Memory (Federated) option for scalability or a Standalone (Single-Process) option for usability.

Vortex OpenSplice Architecture - Federated and Standalone Deployment

To take advantage of modern computing architectures, it has become increasingly more important to be able to exploit multicores. Vortex OpenSplice provides a shared-memory deployment option that facilitates a federated architecture by offering ultra-low latency inter-core communication along with maximal nodal scalability. Vortex OpenSplice also provides the default Standalone deployment option for environments where shared memory is unavailable or undesirable.
 
Scalability Feature

Recognizing the difficulty of choosing the right architecture upfront in the system design and development cycle, Vortex OpenSplice allows you to run exactly the same application, meaning the same executable, in different architectural styles by simply changing a runtime parameter. This makes Vortex OpenSplice the only Data Distribution Service (DDS) middleware implementation that gives you the choice of selecting, as well as easily adapting, the deployment architecture that best suits you.

Shared-Memory (Federated) Scalability:

When configuring Vortex OpenSplice for the Federated deployment architecture, data is physically present only once on a machine’s federation, and smart administration still provides each subscriber within the federation with his own private 'view' on this data. This allows a reader’s data cache to be perceived as an individual 'database' that can content-filtered, queried, etc. (using the content-subscription profile as supported by the Vortex OpenSplice core). The shared-memory architecture results in an extremely low footprint, excellent scalability and optimal performance when compared to other DDS implementations where each reader/writer are ‘communication-endpoints’ each with their own storage (i.e. historical data both at reader and writer) and where the data itself still has to be moved, even within the same platform.

Standalone (Single-Process) Usability:

This deployment allows the DDS applications and Vortex OpenSplice middleware libraries to be simply linked together into a single operating process. One of the advantages of this deployment option is that, there is no need to pre-configure a shared memory segment as dynamic heap memory is utilized by the standalone process. Apart from this 'zero-configuration' advantage, there's also no need to start up the federation's services as all functionality is 'bundled' within the application process. The middleware's lifecycle and with that, the lifecycle of the information is 'simply coupled' to that of the application. Standalone/Single Process deployment is the default architecture provided within Vortex OpenSplice and allows for easy deployment with minimal configuration required for a running DDS system.


     
Integration

As Data Distribution Service (DDS) adoption grows from systems to systems of systems there is a pressing need to easily integrate independently developed, DDS-based systems with each other as well as with other technologies.

Vortex OpenSplice DBMS Connect is a commercial pluggable service option that provides seamless integration of the real-time DDS and the non/near real-time enterprise DBMS domains.

Where (Relational) databases play an essential role to maintain and deliver typically non- or near-real-time enterprise information in mission systems, Vortex OpenSplice targets the real-time edge of the spectrum of distributing and providing the right data, at the right time, at the right place, every time by providing a Quality-Of-Service (QoS) aware real-time information backbone. The typical type of information traditionally differs in the various mission-system domains such as equipment-control, sensor-data fusion for awareness, planning and monitoring. The growing trend in these distributed decision systems is to handle more and more information from increased numbers of local / real-time as well as remote / non-real-time information sources. This means that these boundaries between information-stores and real-time data distribution needs to be lifted.
Integration Feature

The DBMS-connect module of Vortex OpenSplice answers this challenge in the following ways:
  • Transparently 'connects' the real-time DDS ‘information backbone’ to one or more 'enterprise' databases
  • Allows both enterprise as well as embedded/real-time applications to access and share data in the most 'natural' way

The DBMS-connect module thus effectively eliminates traditional 'barriers' of the standalone technologies by facilitating seamless data-exchange between any ODBC compliant (SQL)database and the Vortex OpenSplice real-time DDS "information-backbone". Applications in traditionally separated mission-system domains can now exploit and leverage each other’s information in a highly efficient (based upon ‘current interest’ as supported by the publish/subscribe paradigm of DDS), non-disruptive (obeying the QoS demands as expressed for data-items in DDS) and distributed service-oriented paradigm.

Record and Replay Feature
Vortex OpenSplice Record and Replay (RnR) is a Service that provides Record and / or Replay capabilities of Data Distribution Service (DDS) data. Vortex OpenSplice RnR has two distinctive components: (1) one or more pluggable Vortex OpenSplice RnR services that perform the actual record and / or replay of data, and (2) a dedicated Vortex OpenSplice RnR Manager Tool providing control over the RnR services. This allows recorded datasets import, analyzing, changing, and / or merging these and optionally exporting them to a target-system for replay purposes. Communication

The following Vortex OpenSplice Data Distribution Service (DDS) Communication options are available:
  • Vortex OpenSplice DDSI2 provides a fully compliant implementation of the OMG-DDSI / RTPS rev2.1 interoperable wire-protocol standard.
  • Vortex OpenSplice DDSI2E provides determinism and scalability enhancements whilst preserving interoperability with other OMG DDSI Rev2.1 implementations  as well as supporting optional encryption of data.
  • Vortex OpenSplice RTNetworking provides native Real-Time network-scheduling for deterministic large-scale systems.
  • Vortex OpenSplice SecureRTNetworking provides a secure version (with encryption and access-control) of the RTNetworking service.


   
Extensibility

Evolutionary Data Models
Many of our customers have asked us to integrate support for the popular Google Protocol Buffers (GPB) into Vortex as this is a widely accepted, well known and proven technology to capture evolutionary data-models in a language- and platform-neutral way.
Extensibility Feature
Vortex now has seamless integration with this technology where users can define their topic-types in so-called '.proto' files rather than in explicitly formatted 'traditional' IDL files and benefit from GPB specific features such:
  • optional fields
  • default field values
  • added / new fields

It is especially the capability to add new fields without breaking backwards compatibility that provides the 'evolutionary character' to this alternative way of dealing with topic types. The integration targets a seamless experience for both existing GPB users as well as existing Data Distribution Service (DDS) users:
 
For existing GPB users:
  • there is no notion (nor related knowledge) of OMG-IDL anymore
  • applications only interact with GPB-types (using generated field-accessors), not with OMG-DDS datatypes

For existing DDS users:
  • data-centricity and content-awareness are preserved by allowing (optional) annotation of (key) fields in the .proto files
  • thus realizing a global-dataspace of extensible proto-buffers
  • existing DDS entities (participants, publishers, subscribers, readers, writers) and QoS policies remain 'untouched'
  • tooling such as the Vortex OpenSplice Tester handles IDL and evolutionary GPB types transparently & concurrently


   
API's

Distributed Systems can be seen as a collection of computations evolving a distributed state in response to stimuli. These stimuli can be triggered by certain states or by the cyber / physical world, such as sensors, operators, etc. The Vortex OpenSplice Data Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS) standard implementation provides first-class support for representing distributed states as well as asynchronous event distribution. These include:

Vortex OpenSplice DCPS - a set of APIs that present a coherent set of standardized "profiles" that target real-time information-availability for domains ranging from small-scale embedded control systems right up to large-scale enterprise information management systems.

Vortex OpenSplice MATLAB and Simulink - enables users to transparently share data between MATLAB / Simulink and DDS applications no matter where they have been deployed in the network.

Vortex OpenSplice RMI - simplifying synchronous interactions by means of a Remote Method Invocation.

Vortex OpenSplice Streams - providing unprecedented throughput of millions of samples / second for typical periodic stream data.

Google Protocol Buffers (GPB) - providing support for the widely adopted GPB technology used to capture evolutionary data-models in a language- and platform-neutral way.

Vortex OpenSplice Labview - a DDS binding for National Instruments LabVIEW, allowing LabView 2017 applications to connect to a DDS domain and exchange data with other DDS applications.
