Breakthrough bandwidth with PXI Express


Overview:

PXI Express (PXIe), like the PXI system, is a modular instrument platform designed exclusively for measurement and automation applications. PXIe features the same enhanced mechanical integrity as the PXI system, with the added advantage of a PCIe bus delivering up to 8 GB/s bandwidth.

The increased bandwidth recommends the PXIe system as an excellent platform for high bandwidth applications such as high frequency and resolution IF/RF systems, high speed digital interfaces, and high channel count data and high speed image acquisition environments.

The PXIe standard also supports backward compatibility, by which the PXIe system is thoroughly operational with cPCI, PXI, cPCIe, and PXIe modules, greatly reducing upgrade-based expenditure and TCO (total cost of ownership).

Additonally, PXIe systems provide upgraded trigger and synchronization functions, with the single-ended star trigger of the original PXI standard replaced with three pairs of differential star triggers, together with a new 100MHz clock, enhancing both accuracy and quality of measurement performance.

High System Bandwidth

PXIe leverages the high system bandwidth of PCIe, to as much as 8 GB/s, with bandwidth of peripheral slots up to 2 GB/s, under the first generation PCI Express 1.0a, and 12 GB/s, with peripheral bandwidth as high as 4 GB/s under the second generation PCI Express 2.0, depending on system configuration. Low latency is also an advantage of PXIe, greatly improving response speed.

Upgraded Trigger and Synchronization

PXIe adds several new instrument signals to the original PXI trigger & synchronization function. 3 pairs of PXIe differential star triggers, and a new 100 MHz clock, supplementing the original 10 MHz reference clock, easily transfer trigger, clock, and other electrical signals among modules, increasing accuracy and boosting performance of measurement functions.

Backward Compatibility

The PXIe system provides PXI express hybrid slots with backward compatibility. Accordingly, both PXI and PXIe modules are equally supported. As shown, the PXIe hybrid slots expand flexibility of function and minimize upgrade complexity and costs.

  FAQ - PXI Express hybrid slot  
  • What is a PXI Express hybrid slot? Are all PXI modules compatible with the PXI Express hybrid slot?
  • The PXI Express chassis features a unique hybrid peripheral slot design, as shown in Figure 1, accepting PXI Express, cPCI Express, cPCI, and hybrid slot-compatible PXI modules (with XJ4 connector). Legacy PXI-1 modules (with J2 connector) need to be upgraded to hybrid slot-compatible PXI modules.

    For legacy PXI-1 modules with J2 connector, the physical connector must be replaced to achieve compatibility with PXI Express hybrid peripheral slots. As shown in Figure 3, this is accomplished by removing the J2 connector and replacing it with the XJ4 connector.

  • Can ADLINK help me to upgrade existing ADLINK PXI modules to hybrid slot-compatibility?
  • Yes, ADLINK will help achieve compatibility by removing the J2 connector and replacing it with the XJ4 connector through the RMA processes for a nominal fee. It should be noted that the PXI star trigger out function of PXI-9820, PXI-2020, PXI-2022, PXI-7901, PXI-7902, and PXI-7903 only support first segment slots after changing the J2 connector to XJ4 connector.   • Will future PXI modules from ADLINK be all hybrid slot-compatible?
  • ADLINK is presently modifying most of our PXI modules previously using the J2 connector, to achieve compatibility in PXI Express hybrid peripheral slots. We again remind you that not all existing modules are readily hybrid slot-compatible. Some legacy products such as PXI-9820 and PXI-2020 PXI data acquisition modules will not be converted to the new connector, to retain the original PXI Star trigger function.
