In an automated parking complex, drivers need only park at an entry pallet or port. Images of the car are captured and transmitted to a controller where dimensions of the car are read and the license plate recorded. Meanwhile, the driver pays by card and the system provides authorization, possibly via voice recognition. Once sensors have verified the entry pallet or cabin is empty of occupants, the process of automatic moving and parking will be initiated. The car will be moved by an elevator or a carousel system up to the storage floors and parked into an appropriate space with security guarantee.

To command and coordinate all the controllers and subsystems, automated parking systems require precise control, robust and reliable networking, and secured system maintenance.

IoT-based Automated Parking Systems

Conventionally, the electromechanic systems driving the automatic parking and retrieval process are controlled by a PLC (programmable logic controller), with which parking attendants direct the system using a control panel at the entrance. The PLC is a closed system based on a unique programming language, and is often situated in a remote location, presenting inconvenience when data is to be read from the PLC unit via an HMI device linked by an RS-485 serial cable.

Using an Internet of Things (IoT) gateway to connect with the PLC, however, sensors and other edge devices, field data can be retrieved, analyzed and stored to the cloud. This allows the parking system to be monitored and controlled from a remote control center in real time, providing considerable benefits to the management and efficiency of the parking systems.

The IoT gateway links the PLC with the PC-based monitoring control system, allowing PLC data to be read and basic repair and maintenance tasks executed by way of a handheld panel or other mobile device linked to the network via 3G/WiFi or other Ethernet connection.

As IoT gateways continually upload the PLC data to local servers and the cloud, operating status from multiple towers can be remotely monitored in real time, alerting admin to problems which can be alleviated in a timely manner. Risk of system failure and the requirements of onsite maintenance are thus minimized, improving efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.

Further, with cloud computing enabled by IoT technology, new applications can be developed to increase value-added services. A smart city parking system can be developed that enables drivers to locate nearby parking vacancies through a GPS/web-based mobile device accessing cloud information.


Since automated parking garages represent a significant investment, connection of existing PLC systems and equipment to external facilities requires a reliable, cost-effective IoT solution. The MXE-100i connects to and collects data from the PLC, which is then transmitted in PC-based formats to the local server. Accordingly, data concerning the operating state of the automated parking system enables real-time monitoring, reducing the need for onsite visits and thus reducing maintenance costs and increasing efficiency.
